One Book, One Town – Titanic Tragedy

Titanic Tragedy

Vincent McDonnell

Schools in Waterford have chosen Vincent McDonnell's rousing tale of the sinking of the Titanic as their One Book One Town for 2010. Since it sank on a cold April night in 1912 the Titanic has held a special mystery and fascination. It is unlikely our infatuation with the ship will ever fade. If anything, its allure will grow with time. It is the world’s most famous sea tragedy, in which over 1,500 lives were lost.

Why was the ship built and what were the dreams of those who built her? The story traces the voyage from Europe, the collision with the iceberg, and the sinking – focusing on the heroism, bravery or cowardice of both passengers and crew. The rescue efforts and aftermath of the tragedy, and the finding of the wreck in the 1980s, are also included.

The book paints a picture of society at the time, showing the differences in the various classes on board the ship and it demonstrates how the sinking of the Titanic taught people the importance of treating others as equals.

One Book, One Town – The Boss

Shackleton – The Boss

The Remarkable Adventures of a Heroic Antarctic Explorer

Michael Smith

Ernest Shackleton was born near Athy, County Kildare, in 1874, so there's a strong connection between him and the pupils in the County Kildare schools who have chosen Shackleton – The Boss as their One Book for their Own Town. One Book, One Town is a great project that encourages reading amongst all members of the community. Choosing one book for a lot of people to read means that no one feels that they're on their own reading and also emphasises how reading can bring a community together. Last year, schools in Cork and Waterford chose Michael Smith's other book for children, Tom Crean – Ice Man, as their One Book. Pupils, teachers and parents had a lot of fun with the project, which even led to the building of an igloo! We're sure that the schools in Kildare will rise to the challenge and will enjoy the story of The Boss.

Any schools interested in choosing one of our children's books for their own One Book, One Town project should contact The Collins Press on 021-4347717 or by emailing enquiries@collinspress.ie
